Dental Bonding Can Conceal Minor Imperfections in Your Smile
Many people go through life feeling self-conscious about their smiles. What many people don’t realize is that there are options available that can dramatically improve your confidence in your smile. Dental bonding, offered at our Wilmington, DE, dental office, provides an affordable, effective, and easy solution for a number of cosmetic flaws. To learn more, schedule a consultation with Dr. Jeffrey Emmi, Dr. Laura Dougherty, or Dr. Jeffrey Bartoshesky today.
Bonding is among the easiest, quickest, and most cost-effective cosmetic dental procedures available, and is often a less costly option to porcelain veneers. Bonding has a wide assortment of uses, and may be recommended to address:
- Teeth that are unusually shaped
- Small chips and cracks
- Short or eroded teeth that need to be elongated
- Gaps between teeth
- Areas of discoloration on the teeth
Bonding material also provides a cosmetic alternative to traditional metal amalgam fillings, and can protect the root of a tooth that might be exposed as a result of gum recession. All in all, bonding is flexible and affordable, making it a perfect option for dental issues of all types.
The Dental Bonding Procedure
Dental bonding involves the direct application of bonding material to the tooth. The material is then shaped as needed before it is cured (or hardened) and polished. The composite resin your dentist uses will be chosen to match your tooth color as closely as possible. After slightly roughening the surface of the tooth, a conditioning liquid will be applied to encourage bonding.
Once your tooth has been prepared, the bonding material is applied, molded, and smoothed until it is in its proper shape. A laser or ultraviolet light is used to ensure the material has hardened. Once it is securely adhered and hardened, the dentist will make very slight adjustments to ensure its shape and polish matches the rest of your tooth. The entire procedure can typically be completed in just one visit. In fact, if you are having just one tooth repaired or worked on, it can take less than an hour. If you have more than one tooth requiring treatment, you may need to come for a second visit.
Maintaining Your Results
As with all dental work, it’s important to follow through with good home care. Dental bonding should last for several years to a decade or more, but you do need to remember that the bonding material can be damaged if it is not cared for properly. Try to avoid habits that have the potential to damage the restoration. This includes chewing on things other than food, such as fingernails or pen caps. If you do, you face the risk of needing repairs sooner than you should. To maintain your restoration, simply brush your teeth and floss at least once daily, and visit your dentist for cleanings twice a year.
