Sedation Dentistry Can Ease Your Anxiety
Many patients avoid routine cleanings or much-needed dental treatment for years because of fear or anxiety. At Smile Solutions by Emmi Dental Associates, Dr. Jeffrey J. Emmi, Dr. Laura Dougherty, and Dr. Jeff Bartoshesky strive to ensure comfortable and effective care for every patient we see, especially those suffering with dental phobia. If you experience anxiety in the dentist’s chair, or if you are especially sensitive to dental treatment, we offer sedation dentistry at our Wilmington, DE, office. Using nitrous oxide, we can help you achieve complete relaxation as you undergo the level of treatment you need and deserve. We can also provide local anesthesia for virtually painless treatment. Other amenities such as warm blankets, massage chairs, and virtual reality glasses help make your visit as relaxing as possible. Contact our office today to learn more about how sedation dentistry can be incorporated into your treatment plan.
A Focus on Your Health and Comfort
At Smile Solutions by Emmi Dental Associates, we take every measure to ensure your safety and comfort. Before administering sedation, your dentist will first review your medical history to evaluate your health and make certain that you are a good candidate. He will also inquire about any medications you might be taking to help avoid any potentially adverse drug interactions.
Understanding How Nitrous Oxide Works
Nitrous oxide is an extremely safe and effective sedation option for patients of all ages. Commonly known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is the most common sedative used in dentistry. When you arrive for treatment, we will ensure you are seated comfortably before placing a small mask over your nose and mouth. As you inhale the gas, you will achieve deep relaxation, but remain able to respond to questions and commands. Once you are fully relaxed, your dentist can perform the treatments you need.
Patients experience different sensations while under sedation with nitrous oxide. You may feel some degree of light-headedness or a tingling sensation in your arms and legs. You may also feel that your limbs feel heavier. Warm sensations, a feeling of euphoria, and slight sleepiness are also common with nitrous oxide. All of these sensations are completely normal and will wear off shortly after your mask is removed. Nitrous oxide wears off relatively quickly, so you can safely drive yourself home following treatment.
Nitrous oxide offers many unique advantages. Unlike other forms of sedation, nitrous oxide can be administered for the exact time span required for dental work. The effects of nitrous oxide are felt soon after placing the mask, are easy to monitor and adjust throughout your visit, and wear off relatively quickly as well.
Local Anesthesia for Virtually Painless Treatment
Patients undergoing a more invasive procedure, such as a root canal, will receive local anesthesia to eliminate pain and discomfort. If you choose, we can administer nitrous oxide along with local anesthesia to help you achieve maximum comfort and relaxation. Local anesthesia blocks nerve impulses at the treatment area, and it is typically administered with an injection to the affected area. Patients who are fearful of receiving an injection may wish to be administered nitrous oxide prior to the injection. Following the local anesthesia injection, the affected area will become numb, so you will likely feel no more than mild pressure.
Local anesthesia will temporarily remain in effect for a few hours following your visit to the dental office. It will wear off gradually, so you may need to avoid tough or chewy foods immediately following treatment. Our experienced dental team will monitor your vital signs throughout treatment, and we will be happy to respond to any questions or concerns you might have regarding which type of sedation is best for you.
