Feel Confident in Your Customized, Durable Dental Bridges
Video: Dental Crowns & Bridges
Dental crowns are used at our Wilmington offices to cover teeth that are weakened or otherwise damaged. They distribute weight evenly in the bite, protecting the natural tooth below. Specialized crowns can also anchor dental bridges to fill the gap left by a missing tooth.
Dental bridges fill the space left by missing or extracted teeth. At Smile Solutions by Emmi Dental Associates, each dental bridge we create is customized according to each patient's unique aesthetic and functional needs. Drs. Jeffrey Emmi and Laura Dougherty can create traditional bridges that are supported by adjacent crowns, as well as implant-supported bridges. We use only the highest-quality materials to ensure our bridges are durable and natural-looking. To learn more about dental bridges, contact our Wilmington office today.
How Dental Bridges Work
Drs. Emmi and Dougherty customize dental bridges according to each patient's unique needs. A traditional dental bridge is held in place via specialized crowns. These crowns fit upon the teeth on either side of the space where you are missing teeth. In addition to traditional bridges, Drs. Emmi and Dougherty can also also provide implant-supported bridges. These prostheses are supported in your smile by titanium implants that have been surgically inserted within your jaw. They offer increased security and functionality over traditional bridges.
If you are to receive an implant-supported bridge, our team will take detailed impressions of your gum line, adjacent teeth, and dental implants. This information, along with photographs and X-rays of your smile, are used in our dental laboratory to create your bridge.
If you are receiving a traditional bridge, your adjacent teeth will first be fitted with their specialized dental crowns. This process involves the reduction of your natural teeth, which creates space for your crowns.
Once impressions of your gums or dental implants have been taken, your bridge will be created in the next few weeks in our laboratory. After it is complete, you will return to Emmi Dental Associates for placement. Before any restoration is placed permanently, our dentists will check it for proper fit, and ensure that it does not interfere with your bite. When they have verified that it fits properly, it will be bonded in place, and you are free to leave.
Dental Bridge Materials
We use exceptionally durable, natural-looking porcelain and zirconia in the creation of our bridges. Depending upon your unique needs, your bridge may be made from:
- IPS e.max® porcelain, or
The cost of a dental bridge is largely affected by the material it is made from. Zirconia and other porcelain restorations are generally more costly than traditional partial- or full-metal restorations. Drs. Emmi Dougherty will help you select the right restorative the most appropriate material for your physical and aesthetic needs and your budget.
The Benefits of Dental Bridges
Dental bridges provide many aesthetic and physical benefits, as well as some emotional benefits. They include:
- Restored ability to chew and bite down.
- Increased self-confidence in your appearance.
- Restored ability to speak clearly without shame or physical impairment.
- Stabilization of your adjacent teeth, which can shift when teeth are missing.
Implant-supported bridges provide some additional benefits, as well. Implants themselves stimulate the jaw bone, which slows its natural degeneration that occurs after tooth loss. They also offer an increased level of security and stability versus traditional crowns. Lastly, they relieve any pressure on your adjacent teeth, which will not require crown placement.
