Partial Dentures Restore Your Smile After Tooth Loss
Video: Darlene - Partial Dentures Patient
Darlene first came to Smile Solutions or her dental needs more than 15 years ago. Before she received her partial dentures at our Wilmington offices, Dr. Emmi thoroughly explained the whole procedure to Darlene. Darlene is fully satisfied with her new smile today.
Partial dentures are partial-arch restorations made from several fused-together dental crowns. They restore patients smiles after they have lost some, but not all, of the teeth on an arch. At Smile Solutions by Emmi Dental Associates, we take great care to create natural-looking, durable partial dentures from the finest materials. Drs. Jeffrey Emmi and Laura Dougherty are skilled restorative dentists who can customize a bridge according to your needs, goals, and budget. What Is a Partial Denture?
A partial denture is designed to replace one or more missing teeth in your upper or lower dental arch. There are two primary types of partial dentures:
- Fixed partials, also known as dental bridges, are the most common type of partial denture. To place a fixed partial, Dr. Emmi or Dr. Dougherty will place crowns on the teeth adjacent to the gap in your smile. These hold your restorations in place until they are removed by a member of our team for cleaning, evaluation, or repair. Fixed partials may also be held in place by dental implants.
- Removable partials are individual crowns that rest upon a gum-colored plastic base. These removable partials snap in to metal fixtures, which are first attached to your natural teeth.
Candidates for Partial Dentures
While the preservation of natural teeth is always paramount in restorative dentistry, some teeth simply cannot and should not be saved. Teeth that have become severely damaged by trauma or decay may fall out naturally or need to be removed because they pose a threat to nearby healthy teeth.
If you are missing several teeth across your upper or lower arch, Emmi Dental Associates can help. In addition to creating your partial denture itself, we can place dental implants, perform bone grafting, extract teeth, and a full spectrum of other preparatory treatments should you need them first.
Creating Your Partial Dentures
At Smile Solutions by Emmi Dental Associates, we take a personalized, artistic approach to all restorative treatment. Drs. Emmi and Dougherty will take impressions and pictures of your teeth and send them to the dental lab. We have worked with the same dental lab for many years. Our partial dentures are made of the most advanced materials, including porcelain-fused-to-metal, IPS e.max® porcelain, and zirconia. Whether you choose fixed or removable partials, you can count on receiving a durable, aesthetically pleasing restoration.
Caring for Your Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are extremely easy to maintain. If you select a fixed partial, you will simply need to maintain a regular regimen of brushing, rinsing, and flossing around your bridge. Of course, you should also schedule your routine exams and cleanings.
If you choose a removal partial denture, you will remove and clean your restoration each night. Our team will give you explicit instruction on the proper cleaning of your prosthesis, as improper care can damage your partial bridge.
